Microlocs are very small, tightly interwoven strands of hair that resemble traditional locs but on a much smaller scale. They are an increasingly popular choice for individuals looking for a versatile, natural, and low-maintenance loc style.
Characteristics of Microlocs:
- Typically range in size from 1 mm to 4 mm in diameter.
- Can be started using various techniques, including:
- Twists – A simple and effective way to begin locs with minimal tension.
- Braids – Offers a structured foundation that helps prevent unraveling.
- Coils – Formed by tightly coiling natural hair, commonly used on very textured hair.
- Interlocking – A method that uses a tool to weave the hair through itself, providing a durable and secure structure.
Microlocs vs. Sisterlocks:
Microlocs are often compared to Sisterlocks, a trademarked method of small locs. However, they have key differences:
- Less restrictive care and maintenance rules – Microlocs offer more flexibility with product use and retightening schedules.
- Can be started with extensions – Unlike Sisterlocks, which must be established on natural hair, Microlocs can be started with added hair to achieve immediate length.
- Cost-effective alternative – While Sisterlocks require a certified consultant for installation and maintenance, Microlocs can be done by skilled locticians or even DIY, making them more accessible.
